No-cost oral chemotherapy medication now available for eligible Texas patients
Texans can also donate unopened medication for redistribution
MEMPHIS, Tenn., Oct. 21, 2019 – Texas is now one of just three states — along with Tennessee and Iowa — where eligible patients can receive no-cost oral chemotherapy prescriptions from a national chemotherapy reclamation program. Texas-based Galaxy Pharmacy is the newest partner in the national network founded by RemediChain, which uses blockchain technology to connect individual medication donors to patients in need.
“Prescriptions have become increasingly inaccessible to those without the funds to purchase them, and 32 million Americans report that they can’t afford their medication,” said Phil Baker, founder of Good Shepherd. “Meanwhile, more than a billion dollars worth of medication is destroyed each year. It’s especially disheartening when considering that a 30-day supply of oral chemotherapy can cost up to $45,000 – a prohibitive expense for almost anyone, but especially patients who are uninsured or underinsured.”
RemediChain is able to accept individual donations thanks to its cutting-edge blockchain technology, which creates an immutable record of custody. The program currently accepts high-value, unopened oral chemotherapy tablets and capsules in their original packaging. A licensed pharmacist then inspects the medication and certifies it for redistribution. Since it launched in 2018, the program has taken in more than $3 million worth of donated medication, some of which has already been dispensed to patients in need.
Instead of throwing away unused prescriptions, people with unused oral chemotherapy medications can donate them to RemediChain for redistribution to patients in need. To find out if your medication is eligible to donate, visit RemediChain.com and click “Donate.” Once a donation has been registered, it is entered into the blockchain ledger and made available for patients in need. Currently, prescriptions can be dispensed to patients in Texas, Tennessee, or Iowa. However, medications can be donated from anywhere in the country.
“Texas has more uninsured residents than any other state in the nation,” said Dr. Aderonke Ademolu, owner of Galaxy Pharmacy. “In 2018, 17.7% of Texans went without health coverage, compared to a national average of 8.9%. The need for a program like this is pronounced, and I have no doubt it will save lives.”
